The HIPS was founded in 2009 as a site of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in collaboration with Saarland University and is the first publicly funded non-university research institution in Germany explicitly dedicated to pharmaceutical research. HIPS’ focus is on the discovery and development of novel active ingredients against infectious diseases.

The departments at HIPS collaborate closely with Saarland University and the local pharmaceutical industry as well as national and international research institutions and companies. Since 2009, HIPS has constantly grown to over 220 employees in 2023 and is currently undergoing further spatial and thematic expansion funded by the Saarland state and federal government. Core research areas of HIPS will be strengthened and complemented by adding state-of-the-art bioinformatics and microbiota research to the institute’s portfolio. To accommodate for the increasing number of researchers at HIPS, new lab and office spaces will be set up in the coming years.

The Natural Product-Based Active Ingredient Synthesis Working Group focuses in particular on making antibiotic-active compounds—especially those of natural origin—synthesizable and on optimizing their properties through late-stage functionalization.

Responsibilities:

  • You will be responsible for the independent planning and implementation of research projects, in particular the synthesis of sp³-rich natural product-based active ingredient fragments, as well as the functionalisation and optimisation of bioactive natural products
  • You will support the research projects of other scientists with your expertise, including the supervision of undergraduates and PhD students
  • You will help to develop the infrastructure of the fragment library within the Natural Product-Based Drug Synthesis research group and oversee and coordinate its use by our collaborative partners

Requirements:

  • You hold a PhD in chemistry or a related subject, have experience in organic synthesis, and are interested in natural product chemistry within the context of pharmaceutical research
  • You have in-depth knowledge of the development of organic synthetic routes, particularly in the total synthesis of natural products

  • You have in-depth knowledge of the preparation of (sp³-rich) bioisosteres or natural product analogues, as evidenced by publications

  • You have a sound knowledge of the use and operation of modern analytical and preparative equipment (HPLC, HPLC-MS, NMR), the evaluation and interpretation of the corresponding measurement results, and the use of standard computer software for word processing (e.g. MS Word), creating presentations (e.g. MS PowerPoint) and chemical-analytical software

  • You are willing to work closely within an international team and possess a very good command of spoken and written English, as well as extensive experience in preparing publications

  • Experience in supervising undergraduates and PhD students and in securing third-party funding

Advantageous for this position:

  • Experience with digital laboratory environments, e.g. working with electronic laboratory journals, research data management, etc.
  • Experience in science communication, e.g. at Science Days, Girls’ Days, etc.
  • Experience in organising scientific events
  • Experience in setting up laboratory infrastructure
  • Ability to work in a team

We offer you:

  • An attractive and varied job in a future-oriented research institute
  • A state-of-the-art infrastructure and the latest technologies
  • Flexible working hours, part-time models as well as home office
  • A corporate culture of appreciation and promotion of equal opportunities
  • Extensive training and continuing education opportunities to develop professional knowledge and personal skills
  • A family office to support family and career as well as childcare offers
  • Interesting additional public service benefits
  • Possibility of an employer subsidy for the job ticket
