The Helmholtz Institute for One Health in Greifswald (HIOH) is looking for a

technical assistant (f/m/d)

The Helmholtz Institute for One Health (HIOH), a site of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) located in Greifswald, aims to explore links between human, animal, and environmental health. Our goal is to generate a better understanding of zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and the evolution of pathogens, critical cornerstones for ultimately developing pandemic preparedness and prevention. The institute was founded in 2021 and harbors international and interdisciplinary research teams creating a hub for cutting-edge One Health research at the Baltic Sea.

The Department of Pathogen Evolution generally aims at providing a compelling evolutionary framework to understand the emergence and spread of infectious agents in human and animal populations. For this, it characterizes long-term dynamics of host-pathogen associations using comparative approaches across host species and it reconstructs recent, major pathogen emergence events and their immediate consequences using pathogen paleogenomics.

Our laboratory collects a variety of samples from humans, animals and the environment (including wildlife and museum specimens) and employs a broad range of molecular biology techniques, including nucleic acid extraction, PCR and all its derivatives, preparation of multiple types of high-throughput sequencing libraries (Illumina and ONT), enrichment of libraries with hybridization capture and sequencing. We recently acquired a small fleet of laboratory robots aimed at automating some of these workflows.

In particular, your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing reagents and sample collections, and maintaining laboratory equipment
  • Running laboratory analyses, from initial nucleic extraction to the enrichment and sequencing of high-throughput sequencing (HTS) libraries
  • Documenting laboratory procedures in accordance with internal quality standards
  • Training scientific staff in laboratory techniques
  • Participation in general HIOH laboratory organization and shared service tasks (approx. 20% of working time)

You should ideally have the following qualifications:

  • Appropriate professional qualification as a biology/chemistry technical assistant
  • Experience with most aforementioned molecular biology techniques like cDNA-Synthesis, PCR, qPCR, including HTS-related ones
  • Use of English as an everyday professional language
  • Experiences in standard software (MS-Office) and data bank management systems
  • Prior experience with automation of molecular biology experiments would be a plus but is entirely optional
  • Prior experience in an ancient DNA laboratory would be a plus but is entirely optional
  • Responsible behavior, flexibility, team work, motivation, engagement

We offer:

  • An exciting, varied job, in a future-oriented research institute where the contribution of technical staff is very highly valued
  • An international and professionally diverse scientific environment
  • Extensive support for the development of technical and transferable skills
  • Flexible working hours, part-time models as well as home office
  • A corporate culture of appreciation and promotion of equal opportunities
  • A family office to support family and career as well as childcare offers
  • If there is interest, opportunities for travel to train team members in laboratory methods in Uganda and/or the Ivory Coast would be possible, but not required
  • The HZI is activly commited to equality, diversity and integration. For this reason, the HZI pursues the goal of professional equality between women and men and expressly
  • The position is suitable for part-time work.

Severely disabled applicants will be given preference in cases of equal professional suitability. In order to safeguard your rights, we ask you to provide us with a clearly recognizable reference to the existence of a degree of severe disability in your cover letter or resume.
