Student Assistant Library / Digital Office (m/f/d)
The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig is a member of the Helmholtz Association and conducts cutting-edge research in the field of infectious diseases. Its goal is to develop novel approaches to prevention, diagnosis, and therapy. The focus is on bacterial and viral pathogens, their interaction with the human immune system, and new drugs and vaccines.
Digital Office (DO) – Framework for digital transformation
Digital transformation has become a key challenge both in the scientific work of the HZI and in its administration. The Digital Office (DO) provides the framework for this: We develop, implement, and advise on innovations and processes related to digitalization – with the aim of enabling employees to experience the opportunities offered by digital tools for better work results.
Since February 2025, the library has been an integral part of the Digital Office.
The HZI library provides the center with media and scientific information across all locations. Its tasks also include maintaining the institutional publication database and repository, monitoring open access publications, and supporting science in the publication process.
We are looking for a student assistant for the library team in the Digital Office.
The position combines two main areas of focus:
On the one hand, you will support the team in the ongoing renovation and relocation phase of the library by providing organizational support for relocation and disposal processes, documenting work steps, and assisting in the structuring of inventory and work lists. Second, you will work with the Digital Office to develop AI concepts for the library context and establish them within the team by identifying suitable use cases and providing practical support for their introduction into service, research, and publication support (in compliance with data protection regulations and internal guidelines).
Are you interested in gaining valuable practical experience at a renowned research institution alongside your studies? Then you've come to the right place! Get to know the processes in the library and thus in the scientific publication process and acquire in-depth knowledge of the daily work.
Your tasks:
- Support with relocation and disposal processes (e.g., inventory movements, sorting, documentation, organizational tasks)
- Maintenance and structuring of lists/work statuses (e.g., inventory and process overviews)
- Assistance with day-to-day library tasks (e.g., simple research, support activities in the service department—as needed)
- Collaboration on process improvements (e.g., checklists, templates, short process descriptions, standardization)
- Collaboration on AI-supported workflow improvements (e.g., collecting use cases, testing tools, documenting results – in compliance with data protection and internal guidelines)
Your profile:
We are looking for a student assistant who enjoys the activities described and the fusion of library and digitization. You are particularly suited for the position if you are familiar with database structures and have experience in the field of agent-based process optimization and support.
Requirements:
- Enrolled student at a German university or university of applied sciences with a focus on library and information science, information management, or computer science
- Interest in library processes and the scientific publication workflow, as well as how AI can support these in a meaningful way
- Initial practical experience in using AI tools (e.g., for text work, research, summarization) and the ability to critically evaluate possible applications
- A structured and goal-oriented approach to work
- Motivation to work and learn independently
- Enjoyment of working in a diverse team and environment
- Strong communication skills
- Good language skills in German and English
- Confident use of IT systems and MS Office programs, especially Excel, Word, and Outlook
We offer you:
- An attractive and varied role in a forward-looking research institute with an international environment at the Science Campus South in Braunschweig
- State-of-the-art infrastructure and cutting-edge technologies
- Initial insights into everyday working life and the opportunity to contribute your own ideas and take on responsibility
- The prospect of long-term collaboration
- An experienced team to support you
- Flexible working hours
- A corporate culture that values and promotes equal opportunities
Given equal professional qualifications, severely disabled persons will be given preference. To protect your rights, please clearly indicate any severe disability in your cover letter or resume.

Start date: As soon as possible
Fixed term: 6 months, extension is possible in principle
Remuneration: 13.98 / 13.59 euros (depending on study progress)
