Scientific Calculation Specialist (f/m/d)

The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, based in Braunschweig, is a member of the Helmholtz Association and conducts cutting-edge research in the field of infectious diseases. Our scientists develop novel methods and strategies to combat infectious diseases more quickly and effectively. Our common goal is to develop novel approaches to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infectious diseases. Our research focuses on bacterial and viral pathogens, their interaction with the human immune system, and new effective drugs and vaccines.

Digital transformation has become a key challenge both in the science of the HZI and in its administration. Rapid technological development is revolutionizing the way life science research is conducted and how we organize a research center administratively.

The newly established Digital Office provides the framework for this. We develop, implement, and advise on innovations and processes related to digitalization. Our goal is to enable all employees to experience the great opportunities and possibilities of digitalization for new insights and better work results.

This includes, above all, coordinating HZI Digital Health activities, as well as creating and implementing the fields of the scientific digitalization strategy and implementing the administrative digitalization strategy.
For this task, we are looking for innovative minds with a desire to learn and shape the future. Our department creates a modern and flexible working environment, which must be shaped by your own expertise and experience, while leaving room for your own growth. The task grows with you and you grow with the task.

Your responsibilities:

The core task of the Digital Office is to jointly prepare the HZI for the data-driven research of the future. Data scientists in particular depend on a high-performance and scalable infrastructure. You will help to design and shape this infrastructure by keeping an eye on the latest solutions and identifying relevant trends

  • Also taking other technology trends such as cloud computing and AI into account and implementing them profitably
  • Establishing suitable exchange formats and committees for decision-making
  • Not only plan strategies, but also implement them independently in projects

In addition to this very demanding field of activity, there is the opportunity to become deputy head of the Digital Office and represent the CDO.

Your qualifications:

  • Experience in developing IT and digital strategies for scientific institutions with a focus on data science
  • In-depth knowledge of high-performance computing, method development, and the application of modern IT infrastructures for complex simulations and data analysis
  • Excellent knowledge and experience in establishing AI models in the research process
  • Knowledge of cloud computing, AI applications on HPC infrastructure, and management/backup systems
  • The ability to identify and evaluate trends and transfer them to your own organization
  • Experience in setting up and moderating exchange formats and committees for decision-making
  • Initial diversity-sensitive management experience as a team or department head
  • Very good communication skills in German and English, both written and oral
  • Willingness to acquire missing knowledge

We offer you:

  • An attractive and varied role in a future-oriented research institute with an international environment at the Science Campus South in Braunschweig
  • State-of-the-art infrastructure and cutting-edge technologies
  • Flexible working hours, part-time models, and working from home
  • A corporate culture that values and promotes equal opportunities
  • Extensive training and continuing education opportunities to develop professional knowledge and personal skills
  • A family office to support family and career, as well as offers for improved childcare, e.g., during the holidays
  • Interesting additional benefits of public service
